Some time ago, friend Luca Diffuse sent us a smart 1979 documentary called The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces, directed by William H. Whyte's text reviews urban environments from a perspective of design. They apparently put the whole thing up on YouTube. As a design form that privileges the social life of small urban spaces, the parkettes are brilliant. I was forwarded this video by a former colleague, which was very handy because I missed the Urban Design Groups film night when this was shown. Where is this – and why doesn't it work very well as a public space? The title says “small urban spaces”, but notice how wide the sidewalks are, the fact that there is a plaza, a water feature, places to sit as well as to stand.
